We will be observing the following Chinese funeral customs:
Prior to the start of the viewing, the immediate family will burn incense and joss paper. This tradition ensures that loved ones will have what they need (including gold nuggets, and for grandma a mahjong set) in the afterlife. Note: the incense will likely be burning throughout the viewing period.
Females in the family will wear mourning flowers in their hair: white (daughter and daughter-in-law) and green (grandchildren).
Grandma’s son and son-in-law will wear a black armband.
Guests are welcome to wear dark colors or even red or pink to celebrate grandma’s passing later in life (after 80).
Guests will receive a piece of candy and a white packet with a quarter. Please eat the candy and spend/donate the quarter before you go home to seal your luck.
At the end of the viewing service and before the casket is sealed, family members will turn their backs. This is because of the belief that the souls of family members who see the casket being closed will be trapped in the casket.
